# The Timeless Grandeur of Ancient Nalanda: World’s First Global Residential University
Long before Oxford, Cambridge, or Bologna were conceived, ancient India possessed an epicenter of higher learning that astonished travelers from across the Eurasian landmass: **Nalanda Mahavihara**.
Founded in the 5th century CE under the patronage of the Gupta dynasty (specifically Emperor Kumaragupta I), Nalanda stood in what is today Bihar, India. It was not merely a monastic retreat; it was an intellectual powerhouse where medicine, mathematics, logic, linguistics, astronomy, metallurgy, and Buddhist philosophy were rigorously scrutinized and taught.
## The Monumental Scale of Nalanda
Historical accounts documented by Chinese pilgrim-scholars such as Xuanzang (Hsuan-tsang) and Yijing (I-tsing) paint an awe-inspiring picture:
- Over **10,000 resident students** and **2,000 revered teachers** resided simultaneously on campus.
- The university provided completely free education, room, board, and medical care funded by revenue generated from hundreds of royal surrounding villages.
- The library complex, known as **Dharmaganja** (Treasury of Truth), spanned three massive multi-storey structures: *Ratnasagara* (Sea of Jewels), *Ratnodadhi* (Ocean of Jewels), and *Ratnaranjaka* (Jewel-Adorned). The library contained hundreds of thousands of rare palm-leaf and birch-bark manuscripts.
## Rigorous Admission Process
Admission to Nalanda was fiercely competitive. Legend says that prospective scholars had to pass a grueling oral examination conducted by the *Dwarapala* (gatekeeper scholar) at the very entrance gates. Only about two or three out of ten applicants managed to gain entry.
## Architectural Marvel of Red Brick
Excavations have revealed grand red-brick monasteries (*Viharas*) built in a symmetric quadrangle layout around a central open courtyard, bordered by cells for student monks, wells, and lecture podiums. The immense Sariputta Stupa remains a breathtaking testimony to classical Indian engineering and aesthetic elegance.
## Revival of the Flame
Today, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Nalanda inspires modern revival. The revived Nalanda University in Rajgir stands as a beacon to ancient India's universal vision of *Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam* — the world is one family.
